Hiking last weekend at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Turns out hiking in sand is hard. Especially when carrying all of your water for 3 days in a desert.
We did this, only it was to camp out on Assateague National Park. Hiking in sand is SO hard…and it was pretty discouraging being constantly passed by 4WD trucks which are bizarrely allowed to drive on the MD side. We hitchhiked on the way back out…and the next summer, we took our own truck.
I love that the horses are just hanging out on the beach at Assateague. I was there a few years ago but didn’t do much hiking. Last weekend we were going to be hiking 14 miles round trip with big packs up and down dry sand dunes, but the bear cut it down to 4 by eating our food. I think I might be a little glad that that was the case.
